The Year of the Priest Prayer

Holy Cure of Ars you have become an outstanding model for the priests of the whole world.
Give our priests a love for the Church, apostolic zeal and steadfastness in trials.

Awaken in the hearts of young people an awareness of the splendour of the priesthood and the joy of responding to the call of the Good Shepherd.

St John Vianney intercede for us to God. Through you, humble and faithful pastor, may we be granted an abundance of priestly vocations to serve the people of our diocese.

AMEN

THE PRIEST IS A PREACHER AND A CUSTODIAN OF THE MYSTERIES OF GOD

The priest is a preacher. He comes to announce the "good news." St. Paul tells us so:

For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
But they will not ask his help unless they believe in Him, and they will not believe in Him unless they have heard of Him, and they will not hear of Him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as scripture says:

The footsteps of those who bring good news is a welcome sound.
(Romans 10, 13-15)

Faith comes from hearing and the message and joy of salvation won't be heard unless there is a "preacher." Like Christ himself, the priest announces the joy of knowing the eternal father.

The priest is a custodian of the mysteries of God. Again St. Paul tells us so:

People must think of us as Christ's servants, stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God. What is expected of stewards is that each one should be found worthy of his trust.
(Corinthians 4, 1-2)

Preaching is the priest's primary role, but his principal role is the celebration of the sacred mysteries. The priest evokes faith so that he can lead his people to an intimate union with Christ crucified and risen. This union is found above all in the celebration of the Mass and in the reception of Christ's Body and Blood.

And so welcome to the website of Good Shepherd Seminary. We are in the business of "making good priests." Priests who lay down their lives for their people; men who will lead their people to know and love Christ, especially in the Eucharist.

Pray for us. If Christ is knocking at your door, then open it. Call us. "Come and see." It is the adventure of a lifetime!
